why whalebags?

100,000 whales, seals, turtles, albatross and other marine wildlife die every year because of plastic bags.


In the UK alone we use over 17 billion plastic bags a year and each one can take up to 1000 years to rot away, mostly in landfill sites. Worse, a large number of them end up being washed into rivers and streams leading to the sea, where they can be mistaken for jellyfish by the marine wildlife. The swallowed bags block the gut and lead to slow and painful deaths. A WWF article in 2005 reported that, “a rare Cuviers Beaked Whale was washed up dead on Mull in 2004, its gut completely blocked by compacted bags. In 1998, a leatherback turtle, a species on the IUCN’s endangered Red List, was found dead in Galloway with 57kg of plastic bags obstructing its innards. In April 2002, a dead Minke whale in Normandy had 800kg of plastic bags, including UK supermarket bags, in its stomach.” The list goes on… we must stop using plastic bags now.

Jelly fish or plastic bag?

whalebags contain NO PLASTIC at all. Unlike other ‘bags for life’ we pride ourselves on the fact that the bags are made from cotton/calico fabric. We do not even use plastic toggles, instead we use wood. We believe strongly in the need to:

• REDUCE the use of plastic bags
• RE-USE bags repeatedly
• RECYCLE whenever possible
